Distance Learning For An Applied Linguistics Phd

Traditionally PhD programs are not available to online learners, because doctorate programs usually require learners to teach as well as conduct research onsite.

Requirements for the Degree

There are a few schools that allow people who are studying for a doctorate degree to study online. A PhD in Applied Linguistics requires research and study in methods of acquiring language. In order to become a PhD candidate in a program, the students are usually required to have a master's degree in linguistics or another communications-related field. The most competitive candidates have a strong background in research and have had their research published. Overall, distance learning programs usually have the same entry requirements as traditional, on-site programs.

What to Expect in the Program

Distance learning doctorate programs are sometimes considered part-time programs. Therefore, you can keep an outside job while conducting your research. The workload in a distance learning program for applied linguistics should be as rigorous as the workload in traditional programs if the program is administered by a reputable university. Student will usually be expected to participate in discussions online. In a PhD program, students will be expected to demonstrate research ability and critical thinking skills. Some applied linguistics programs require the learner to be able to speak and understand at least two languages.

Possible Career Opportunities

Online distance learning programs will prepare students to become professors of applied linguistics in the United States or abroad. Students can also work as teachers for adult education programs or for schools that cater to children in the United States or abroad. An advantage to the distance learning program, is that it can give students the skills that they need to communicate with others online in an academic setting. Graduates from an online program in linguistics may teach in-person or online.

Schools That Offer the Degree

Look for brick and mortar universities that offer an online program in linguistics. Most universities that are totally online do not offer applied linguistics. Don't limit your choices to schools that are in the United States, because the flexibility of enrolling in an online program enables you to take classes anywhere in the world.

Why is the Degree Beneficial

This degree is beneficial for people who are currently working or plan to work abroad, because students can continue to work while going to school. The online degree gives students a background in research and theory and the skills that they need to practice what they have learned by teaching or researching.
