Make A Letter Of Intent To Return To Work

Send a professional letter to your boss when you will return to work.

If you take a leave of absence from your employment, you may face a situation in which your employer does not know whether or when you will return. Because this ambiguous absence may cause disruption and difficulties for your employer, you should communicate your plans as soon as you know them and in accordance with your employer's requirements. Make a letter of intent to return to work to provide formal notice of your plans.

Instructions

1. Make a formal plan of the specific date you intend to return to work. Ensure that this date fits in with your employer's requirements based on your allotted or planned leave absence. Your employer may only provide you with a specific amount of time. Exceeding this time may jeopardize your employment.

2. Address the letter to your employer, specifically to a supervisor who has the responsibility for overseeing your leave of absence. Write a salutation specifically to this person, using "Dear" and the person's name.

3. Thank your employer for the leave of absence extended to you.

4. Communicate your intent to return to your position. Acknowledge an existing prearranged return date, if applicable. If any circumstances exist that make your return uncertain for any reason, mention them. For example, if your return to work rests with the completion of a course of treatment for an illness, mention an upcoming doctor's appointment that will provide you with a physician's release to work again.

5. Provide the specific date on which you will report for work.

6. Provide a contact telephone number for your employer to speak with you, if necessary.

7. Close the letter by expressing your gratitude for the leave of absence and write something such as, "Looking forward to working with you again."

8. Sign your name to the letter and mail by certified mail to provide proof of receipt.
