Make Fake Bullet Hits

There are lots of reasons you might need to make it look as though something has been hit by a bullet. Maybe you’re making a student film and the climax calls for a hail of bullets. Of course, you could always be pulling a fraternity prank on your dear friends. Maybe you just think it would be fun to tool around in a car that looks as though it’s been shot up Bonnie and Clyde-style. Here’s make fake bullet hits that look real enough to fool just about anyone.

Instructions

1. Determine where the fake bullet hits are going to go. You’ll need different materials depending on where you’re putting your work of art. If you’re putting fake bullet hits into the side of a car, you may not want to pull out a sledgehammer and make a giant hole.

2. Put a hole in the pretend target. You’ll want it to be fairly round to simulate a real bullet hit. Use an awl or a screwdriver to start the hole, then twirl the tool at a wider angle to make the hole bigger. Make sure the lip of the hole isn’t facing out, as a bullet would push these inside on impact.

3. Repeat this on the other face of the surface if you’re putting the fake bullet hit in a place where the bullet would come out the other side. This time, the hole should be a little rougher as a bullet hit would look this way. Use pliers to twist metal, or a file to distress wood.

4. Paint a bullet hit onto the surface if you can’t make a hole in your target. If you can’t put paint on your surface, protect the spot where you’re putting the bullet hit with cling film. Any kind of paint will do, so long as you have the right colors. Start with the darkest black in the center and shade a little lighter on the outside of the ring to make it look as though there’s a shadow.

5. Cut thick pieces of black plastic into small round discs about 1/2-inch thick. Glue these onto the target area in a random arrangement to make it look as though a hail of bullets rained on the surface.

6. Put fake bullet hits in a concrete wall, using a hammer and chisel to take chunks out of the concrete. These should be about 1 inch in diameter and 2 inches deep.

7. Leave a few empty shell casings or spent bullets around the scene to add to the illusion.
