The Highest Ranking Medical Schools

Medical research is a major focus of top-rated medical schools.

The highest ranking medical schools in the United States are among the best medical programs in the world. High-ranking U.S. medical schools generally gain recognition from their cutting-edge research in the field of medicine and because of the breadth of their degree programs and multiple degree offerings. The schools atop most lists of high ranking medical schools in America tend to be near the top of the list on a perennial basis.

Harvard University

The highest rated medical school in the nation, according to the 2010 "U.S. News & World Report" list of top medical programs is located at Harvard University. Other major publications like the "Times Online" in 2009 have ranked Harvard as the best medical school in the world as well. With an annual research budget in excess of $500 million, the medical research performed within the medical school is cutting-edge and helps lead the way in new innovations for the medical field. Harvard's medical school consists of 10 different basic science and social science departments. Clinical departments in fields such as anesthesiology, dermatology, neurology and psychology help lead the way in research. Aside from the doctor of medicine degree (M.D.), Harvard also offers several prominent joint-degree programs. Students pursuing the M.D. can also pursue degrees in business administration (M.B.A.), public health (M.P.H.), public policy (M.P.P.) and the doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.).
