California State Law Schools

California boasts some of the best law schools in the country.


When choosing a law school to attend, make sure it approved by the American Bar Association. There are many excellent law schools in the United States, and California has some of the nation's top programs. As of 2011, California has 20 law schools approved by the American Bar Association.


Stanford Law School


Located in Northern California, Stanford is consistently ranked among the top law schools in California and the country. The program provides a background in legal theory and offers students the opportunity to choose a specialized area of law. The first year of school focuses on institutions of law, legal reasoning and the analysis of judicial decisions. During the second and third years, students choose an academic curriculum based on their interests, such as business and commercial law, litigation or criminal law.


Thomas Jefferson School of Law








Thomas Jefferson School of Law is located in San Diego. It offers a comprehensive curriculum to prepare students for any specialized area of law. The school has more than 155 courses with a strong focus on intellectual property law, entertainment law, international law and legal writing. Some of the required courses include civil procedure, criminal law, constitutional law and property law. The school offers a limited number of scholarships and financial aid is available.


University of California, Los Angeles


UCLA is ranked among the top schools in the country, including its law school. The law school offers more than 200 courses. Some included in the first year curriculum are civil procedure, constitutional law, contracts, property law and criminal law. In the advanced curriculum, students choose courses within specialized areas, for example, First Amendment law, which is a specialized area of constitutional law. Financial aid is available.








Pepperdine University


Overlooking the beach in Malibu is Pepperdine University School of Law. The school prepares and teaches students the necessary skills to have careers as lawyers, advocate, judges, business people and philosophers of law. Pepperdine offers a global program where students can study American Law while living in countries such as England, Germany and Denmark. Financial aid is available and students are encouraged to apply for the Faculty Scholars Award. This award is granted to those who demonstrate academic excellence.
