Scholarships For Online Universities

Online universities are a fast-growing sector of education, and many students are finding that the convenience of taking flexible classes without having to travel fits into their increasingly busy lives. Just like traditional brick-and-mortar universities, however, attending classes at an online university still costs a considerable amount of money. Luckily, many online universities offer scholarships to help their students defray the cost of tuition.

DeVry University Scholarships

DeVry University offers a number of scholarships to students seeking a degree online. The Presidential Scholarship is available to traditional students with a GPA of at least 3.33, and as of 2011, pays for up to 50 percent of a student's total tuition. The Herman DeVry Scholarship is available to traditional students who have a high school GPA of at least 2.7. DeVry University also offers up to $500 per semester to veterans through the Veteran's Appreciation Grant. Students must be United States citizens in order to qualify for DeVry University scholarships. DeVry Scholarship recipients who fall below full-time enrollment will only receive half of their scholarship award.

Western Governor's University Scholarships

Western Governor's University offers a variety of scholarships to online students. The "Go Further" With WGU Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate or graduate-level re-entry students. The WGU Mathematics and Science Educators Scholarships is available to students seeking a career as a science or math teacher. WGU also offers several scholarships to current and former military personnel and their spouses, including the WGU Military and Military Spouse "Go Further" Scholarship, the WGU Reservists and National Guard Scholarship, and the WGU Recognition for Military Sacrifice Scholarship for veterans wounded in battle. Students must complete a FAFSA to be considered for WGU scholarships.

Kaplan University Scholarships

Kaplan University makes several scholarships available to students seeking online degrees. In 2011, the Kaplan University Success Scholarship awards up to $200 per semester for a total not to exceed $3,000. To be eligible, an applicant must be a first-time undergraduate student with a cumulative college GPA of 2.75 or better. The Kaplan University Accelerated Scholars Award can be used to save 25 percent off of the tuition cost for a five or six credit class; to be eligible, a student must take at least 15 credits per semester and must maintain a GPA of at least 3.0.

University of Phoenix Scholarships

The University of Phoenix offers a variety of scholarships to its students. Ten full-tuition ALPFA Professional Leadership Scholarships are awarded to deserving online students each year. In addition to these nationally-available educational grants, the University of Phoenix also offers several regional and state-specific scholarships.
