Get A Certification For Teaching Without A Four Year Degree

Get a Certification for Teaching Without a Four Year Degree

Generally, most teachers get a four-year degree, which enables them to teach in almost any circumstance. However, there are some paths that you can take to become a teacher, even if you don't have that four-year degree. Through experience or teaching abroad you can get your certification without the diploma.

Instructions

Certification Through Work

1. Get a job at a school as a paraprofessional. Some school districts in the public sector will hire you without a degree, but you'll have a better chance getting a job in a private school, a charter school, or other types of alternative schools such as magnet schools.

2. Work hard at your job, and talk to teachers and administrators about various routes to certification. These include workshops, summer courses, and evening college courses that you can take.

3. Sign up for any courses or classes that are offered in conjunction with the school district. Ask how each of them can help you work toward certification. In order to work toward certification, you will need to take enough classes to have the knowledge to pass a certification test in your state. You can get this knowledge through classes and courses, and take the test whenever you think you know enough.

4. Take more classes and courses, and use them to work toward being able to take the certification tests in your area. You can work toward certification in this way, gradually, while you are working in the school district or school of your choice. As you get closer to earning your degree, you'll be able to move into full classroom jobs or other specialty teaching jobs.

Abroad Certification

5. Sign up to teach abroad through one of many companies that you can find at the National Teach Abroad website. You can teach in just about any country in the world. There are many subjects you can teach with various degrees, but you can find a job teaching in almost any country in the world with no degree whatsoever, as long as you speak English.

6. Teach English at one or more countries for several years. This gives you teaching experience and classroom experience.

7. Work on your certification online or through the mail as you are teaching abroad. Do this by taking classes, learning in every subject possible, and keeping track of the things you learn. Each time you teach another semester, you have gained more knowledge and are going to be able to take online classes, take certification tests and sign up for more certification methods.

8. Return from your teaching experience and file for certification, citing your experience and workshops, classes and courses you have taken while teaching.
