A student with medical disabilities can quickly diminish a family's ability to pay for his or her college costs. Scholarships that are specifically designed to help a medically disabled child can make the difference for a student between simply completing high school or graduating college. There are many scholarships available for a large number of medical disabilities and conditions.
Cancer
The Cancer Survivor Fund is open to all high school or college students who are challenged with cancer. The application process includes an essay of how cancer has changed their lives and their goals. Once receiving this $5000-a-year scholarship, the student will be required to serve a certain number of hours per week of community service.
The Patient Advocate Foundation is similar to the Cancer Survivor Fund except that it covers all major illnesses, and requires an essay about the effects of cancer on the high school or college student's goals. Academic merit minimums must also be met in order to receive the $5000-a -year scholarship. The recipient is required to perform a minimum number of hours of community service per week.
SAMFund is a scholarship that has been established to help cancer survivors move forward after the illness. The requirement of this scholarship includes an essay about how their views and goals in life have changed since developing cancer. The name of the scholarship stands for Surviving and Moving Forward. There is no set monetary amount for this scholarship.
SuperSibs! is a college scholarship geared for high school or college siblings of cancer patients. Since cancer affects the entire family and the siblings of the cancer patient, this scholarship recognizes that they deserve a scholarship to assist with their goals of a college education. This scholarship offers $5000 per year.
Asthma and Allergies
The Schering-Plough Corporation sponsors a scholarship called the Will to Win. This corporation provides two $5000 scholarships for each of the five categories of competition, which include athletics, student government, visual arts, performing arts and community service. The students must have a 3.5 GPA and have received an award in the field that they are applying in.
Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network scholarships, www.FoodAllergy.org, are for those high school and college students who have a food allergy. These students must produce an essay about how having a food allergy affects their life and goals. These scholarships award them $1500.
Diabetics
Novo Nordisk Donnelly Awards are scholarships are awarded to students between 14 and 21 years old who have diabetes. This scholarship is for those students who play tennis on a team or in competitions. The tennis players must be serious not recreational players. This scholarship offers them $5000 for college.
Aimee Melissa Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund is a scholarship given to those students of high school and college age with type-one diabetes. This scholarship is given based upon financial need.
The Diabetes Hope Foundation is known for issuing several scholarships to various high school and college students with type-one and type-two diabetes. These scholarships and amounts are based on financial need.
