Fashion Styles For 40+ Women

Choose fashion styles that are age-appropriate and suit your lifestyle.

Who says you can't look amazing simply because you are over the age of 40? If you want great clothes for your busy life, you can build a fashionable wardrobe for work and casual outings. By following a few expert fashion rules, a woman can wave goodbye to her teenage and young-adult fashion years by wearing eye-catching and figure-flattering fashion styles for 40 and beyond.

Pencil Skirts

Pencil skirts flatter every body type. A high-waisted pencil skirt can hide a flabby tummy, while a tapered knee-length skirt boosts curves for women with boyish figures. Pair your pencil skirt with a glittering top for evening outings, or a crisp white shirt and a blazer for business meetings.

Flattering Sheath Dress

A flattering sheath with a V-neck is a basic wardrobe staple that can be dressed up or dressed down with the right accessories. To get the most fashion mileage out of your straight sheath, choose a basic color such as gray, black, brown or blue. Wear your sheath dress with a colorful scarf or pearls for daytime, and a cinched jewel-toned belt and gold or silver shoes for evening.

Build a Shoe Wardrobe

A woman over 40 may attend a variety of special events, from housewarming parties and bridal showers to religious ceremonies and outings with her family. A versatile shoe closet is essential to dressing appropriately and elegantly for each occasion. Build a shoe wardrobe with seven essential pairs of shoes: black pumps, knee high boots, ballet flats, athletic shoes, summer sandals, strappy heels, kitten heels and pumps for work.

Wear Denim

On Oprah.com, fashion expert Tim Gunn recommends that women over 40 should avoid wearing low-rise jeans. There are other styles of jeans, however, that flatter a 40+ figure. These styles include: boot cut, wide-leg and capri style jeans. If you are short or petite, choose a longer length style to elongate the legs. A wider waistband in the jeans, however, can flatter a slightly fuller tummy. To minimize a larger bottom or wide hips, avoid jeans with large pockets and embellishment on the front or sides of the jeans.
