Occupational Therapy In Public Schools

Occupational therapists can help students with special needs write more legibly.

Occupational therapy (OT) improves daily functioning of students with special needs by targeting skills and behaviors needed to complete daily routine tasks such holding a book, writing their name or staying on task. Occupational therapy may be provided during the school day for special needs children who demonstrate a need for such services.

Significance

LD Online explains that occupational therapy may be available to students who receive special education services and have an individualized education plan (IEP). The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) qualifies occupational therapy as a related service that can be provided as part of student's IEP.

Benefits

According to LD Online, occupational therapy may help students with disabilities function and succeed in the classroom. The skills learned in occupational therapy may help students in areas such as sports and recess participation, social skills and self-help skills.

Features

Occupational therapy programs typically involve working on skills such as fine motor skills, handwriting and organizational skills. Occupational therapists may use assistive technology such as special pencils, pencil grips and computer technology to help students with skill deficits. Occupational therapists may also collaborate with teachers to help adapt the classroom environment, materials or assignments to meet the needs of the student. Some occupational therapists may also work on sensory integration as well.

Considerations

Occupational therapy services may be provided if the child's IEP team which consists of regular education teaches, special education teachers and administrators determine that the child will benefit from such services. Also, if the child's doctor writes a prescription for occupational therapy, services will usually approved.

Regulations

IDEA mandates that occupational therapy services be provided by a certified occupational therapist. Also, a certified occupational therapy assistant may provided services so long as they receive supervision from a certified occupational therapist.
