A student is going to Teachers College.
Grace Hoadley Dodge founded Teachers College in 1887. She wanted to provide a school for teacher training. The college became affiliated with Columbia University in 1889 although it has maintained its independence. It is now considered the largest and most comprehensive school of education in the country. In addition to producing teachers, it promotes research projects and influences policy changes in education. Located on 120th Street in New York City, Teachers College enables students to take advantage of the myriad cultural and educational activities available in New York. Museums, libraries, galleries and schools serve to enrich and supplement the learning process.
Instructions
Procedure for applying
1. A B.A. degree is a prerequisite for attending Teachers College.
Complete a U.S. Bachelor of Arts degree from an accredited college or university. International students must submit detailed and official records of work completed. They are required to have the equivalent of a U.S. Bachelor of Arts Degree and must pass the TOEFL, a test to determine English language ability. Students may only apply for one program at a time and need to meet all deadlines.
2. Letters of reference are an important part of the application process.
Download an application. Applications for admission are available by mail or on the Internet. Teachers College prefers that students use the online application, which can be downloaded from their site at www.tc.edu/admissions. Applications sent via mail are to be submitted to the Office of Admission, Box 302, 525 West 120th Street, New York, N.Y. 10027-6696.
The application form is self-explanatory. Teachers College is very specific. Students must include official transcripts and two letters of reference. These are to be written on official letterhead, must be signed and should be sent by people who know you academically. If necessary, you may substitute an employer.
A current resume is required and should list employment and dates.
Standardized tests results such as GRE (Graduate Record Examination) are to be sent directly from the testing bureau to Teachers College. Applicants whose first language is not English must submit the results of the TOEFL. Students who have received a bachelor's degree outside the United States are required to take this test. Check with the Office of Admissions at 212-678-3710 to be sure your field of study does not require additional test results.
State your major. Although you may change later on, you will have to state a major and degree for which you are applying. You may opt for a career in education, health or psychology, the main areas of study at Teachers College. Other majors from which you can choose are listed in the Teachers College application packet or catalog.
3. Describing foreign travel enhances your application.
Compose your "personal statement." This is probably the most important section of the application. It should begin with an attention-grabbing line, quotation, or anecdote to capture the interest of the reader. Your background should include hobbies, experiences, cultural heritage, community service, foreign languages spoken that will set you apart from the other candidates. You should also include reasons why you want to attend Teachers College and what you can contribute to the school and community. Be descriptive and detailed and show how you can add to the diversity of the college. This section should be typed and two pages long.
4. Apply for financial aid if necessary. Financial aid is available to the needy. Call the Office of Student Aid at 212-678-4050 to determine what aid might be available to you through the school or through federal or private funds. This could include Stafford, Pell Grants or TEACH programs.
5. Proofread carefully and check for errors.
Reread your application carefully before submitting it. If necessary make revisions. Be sure you responded to all of the items requested. Be sure that spelling, punctuation and grammar are correct. You want to show the admissions officer that you have good writing skills. It is also important to communicate that you are really interested in attending Teachers College.
