Summer Scholars Programs

Summer scholar programs introduce high school students to college life.

Summer scholar programs offer talented high school students the opportunity to explore potential majors and prepare themselves for the college application process. They benefit from interacting with professors and college students, who can provide them with insight on what college life is like. Students are admitted to summer scholar programs based on a review of high school grades and recommendations from teachers or guidance counselors. Some programs offer scholarships or stipends to participants.

University of Notre Dame

The two-week Summer Scholars program at the University of Notre Dame gives students the opportunity to explore one of 13 academic tracks, such as literature, acting, public speaking, or psychology. Twenty students are admitted to each track. The curriculum varies for each, but may include readings, research and field trips. The Summer Scholars program is open to high school students who are at least 16 years old. They submit transcripts, SAT or ACT scores, a recommendation and counselor report in order to be considered for admission. Students admitted to the program reside on campus. A limited number of scholarships are available for qualified students.

Bates College

The Summer Scholars program at Bates College is open to first-year students at the college, and introduces them to math and science. Scholars take two courses during the summer before their freshman year. In 2010, summer scholars explored great ideas in math and forensic science. Students in the program are assigned mentors who assist them with the transition to college life. The program is selective, admitting 10 first-year students each year. Applicants must send a letter stating why they want to participate in the program and detailing their high school math and science coursework. Accepted students receive a stipend of $2,400, and their tuition, books, room and board are paid. Travel assistance is also available.
