Veterinary students must have a passion for animals, along with the desire to attend four years of veterinary school with the possibility of additional years spent receiving further training in a specialty. As rewarding as a career in veterinary medicine may be, tuition bills are steep. Vet school grants and scholarships ease some of this financial burden.
Veterinary Scholarship Trust of New England
This New England-based 501(c)3 organization provides funding for regional veterinary students' education by awarding several annual scholarships. Only those graduating from a New England public high school or residing in the area for the previous five years may apply. Applications must be signed by licensed New England veterinarians who personally know the applicant personally. While grants are limited to local residents, the veterinary schools they attend may be located anywhere in the United States.
American Kennel Club Veterinary Student Scholarships
Every accredited veterinary school in the country receives annual applications for the American Kennel Club (AKC) Veterinary Student Scholarships, with a request to chose four potential candidates among their students for consideration. Students cannot apply individually. Those involved with purebred dogs or in the dog show world receive priority. Awards are also based on academic merit. Interested applicants should contact their veterinary school's office of financial aid for further information.
