How Does CLEP Work?
About CLEP
CLEP stands for College Level Examination Program. These tests allow you to receive college credits by testing over information you already know. Specific tests are available and the number of college credits you will receive is indicated in the CLEP information and registration test booklet. A college student can save a significant amount of time and money by testing over information in lieu of taking the college class to receive the credits. CLEP charges a fee and the institution administering the test also charges a fee, but the total is less than $100. The student does not attend any classes, pay any lab fees or purchase any books, saving money and time.
Choose, Register and Prepare
Request a CLEP booklet from your local community college administration office or follow the link to the official website provided in the Resources section of this article. Look through the list of available tests and choose your best subject.
Fill out the registration form provided at the back of the CLEP catalog with your name, date of birth, address, preferred testing facility, two preferred test dates and the college you attend. Write two checks--one to CLEP for the test fee, currently $70, and one to the testing administrator, currently $20 for each test. Turn in the form in person to the testing facility or mail the form. Taking the form in person may allow you to test sooner if dates are available.
Test, Receive Score and Credit
Arrive at the test site on your designated date and time. Check in and then sit down at one of the testing computers to take your chosen CLEP. The tests are timed and the computer will stop you when your time is up after about an hour. You immediately receive a printout showing your score on the CLEP test you just completed.
You must receive at least a 50 to receive the college credits allowed for the tests. Most CLEP tests allow for three to six credits. However, the foreign language tests will allow up to 12 depending on your final score. A few weeks after completing your CLEP, you will receive notice in the mail that CLEP advised your college of your credits. The credits from CLEP testing are entered into your college transcript as transfer credits. CLEP credits do count towards any required prerequisites for more advanced classes.
