Medical residency programs offer practical experience to medical interns so they can use the knowledge to further learn the specialties of their choice. Residency programs help train and prepare new doctors to be competent in real life.
Instructions
1. Take United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) during medical school. Once you pass the exam, collect letters of recommendation from your teachers.
2. Write different personal statements for all the specialties that you wish to apply for in residency. Update your resume and add all the practical experience you have gained at work. Include all of your published works and any research experience to make your resume stand out.
3. Register with Electronic Residency Application service (ERAS). Browse through the American Medical Association website, also known as Freida, to see a list of US residency programs in all states of the country.
4. Visit the residency program websites to read about their requirements and admission criteria. Choose from psychiatry, neurology, radiology, internal medicine, surgery and OB-GYN among many.
5. Make a list of all the program specialties that are of interest. E-mail through the Freida website to double check all information before applying in the programs when the residency season opens.
6. Apply through ERAS and regularly check the progress of your application to see whether it has been downloaded by the residency programs for consideration.
