Identification








Kaplan University, founded in 1937 as Kaplan College, is a subsidiary of the Washington Post Company. Since its inception, the school has grown into an educational network made up of 70 campus locations within 20 states. Coursework is provided in both campus-based and online formats. Graduate, undergraduate and certificate program curriculums include business administration, accounting, criminal justice, office management, information technology and communication (see Resources).


Features


Upon admission, students are assigned an advisor for the duration of their time at Kaplan. Advisors work to help students make their way through application processes, financial aid requirements and career planning. In addition to the degree program offerings, Kaplan offers a test prep and admissions service to provide students the tools needed to prepare for final certification exams, as well as exams within the yearly curriculum. Flexible online degree plans are designed for the returning adult student as well as first-time students through the Kaplan Professional program.


Function


Kaplan University online courses create a classroom environment where students can participate in interactive seminars with classmates and instructors. Students also receive ongoing one-on-one feedback from instructors and peers. Weekly discussion board meetings provide guidance and help with class assignments. Online learning journals are used throughout the program to record research projects and as a source for class discussions.


Types








Online credits, books and course materials are all included in the program cost. A $45.00 deposit fee is due at time of enrollment and then deducted from tuition costs once classes are started. As of October 2008, undergraduate courses run $335.00 per credit hour. Graduate coursework is priced at $350.00 per credit hour. A $100 technology fee is applied for each term. Kaplan University online accepts financial aid, scholarship awards and employer reimbursement. Military personnel receive a discount rate per credit hour. The cost for active duty service members and reservists is $166.00 per credit hour for undergraduate programs. Benefits received from the military cover the remainder of the program cost.


Considerations


Kaplan University online courses are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and the school is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). Those looking to cover their expenses through employer reimbursement should make sure these accreditations are covered by their employer's benefit program. Upon graduation, Kaplan's career services department is there to assist with employment search strategies, as well as career guidance as students progress through their programs.
