An international veterinary degree can lead to a career in the U.S. or Canada.
A degree from a veterinarian school leads to many career options within the field. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that job opportunities for veterinarians will grow by 33 percent from 2008 to 2018, much faster than the average rate. However, competition for acceptance into the 28 accredited veterinarian schools in the United States is very high. International veterinarian schools also offer training in fields such as small animal medicine, cancer treatment, dermatology, dental care, surgery, public health and epidemiology. The American Veterinary Medical Association accredits several international schools. Graduates of such schools are eligible to work in the U.S. or Canada.
Massey University
Massey University's Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences is located in Palmerston North, New Zealand. Founded in 1927, the school offers a five-year Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree. Required course work includes classes in medical sciences, pathology, pharmacology, public health and ethics. Students must complete at least 20 weeks of practicum work in both farm and clinical settings. Massey University operates a veterinary hospital, the EpiCentre research and epidemiology center, the Equine Parentage and Animal Genetics Service Centre and the Animal Welfare Science the Bioethics Centre.
University of Edinburgh
The University of Edinburgh's Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, located in Edinburgh, Scotland, was founded in 1823. The school offers two undergraduate options, a five-year Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery for students who wish to become practicing veterinarians and a four-year graduate entry program for students who already posses a degree in animal or biological science. Post-graduate degrees include a Master of Veterinary Science, Master of Science in Research or Infectious Disease, Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy. Students can gain practical experience in the school's Centre for Infectious Diseases, the Scottish Agricultural College or The Moredun Research Institute.
University College Dublin
The University College Dublin's School of Agriculture, Food Science & Veterinary Medicine, located in Dublin, Ireland, offers a Bachelor in Veterinary Medicine and a Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Nursing. Graduate programs include certificates in dairy herd health and canine sports medicine and doctorate degrees in veterinary research, reproductive biology, drug delivery and infection biology. Students can gain hands-on experience at the Centre for Veterinary Epidemiology and Risk Analysis and the UCD Veterinary Hospital.
University of Saskatchewan
The University of Saskatchewan's Western College of Veterinary Medicine, located in Saskatoon, Canada, was founded in 1963. As of February 2011, the school has an enrollment of almost 450 undergraduate and graduate students. School facilities include a teaching hospital, research facilities, a farm, synchroton and diagnostic laboratory. The school offers a four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine undergraduate degree and master and doctorate degrees in Large/Small Animal Clinical Sciences, Veterinary Biomedical Sciences, Veterinary Microbiology and Veterinary Pathology.
