Requirements To Be A Delta Sigma Theta

Exceeding the minimum requirements helps you stand out.

For college women, joining a sorority helps you meet other students, and give back to the community through service projects and other charitable endeavors. Joining a sorority helps you after college as well, thanks to the networking possibilities that come with being a member of Delta Sigma Theta. To join the Delta Sigma Theta sorority, you must meet a few requirements. These requirements can vary based on the college and its rules.

College Status

Girls interested in joining the Delta Sigma Theta sorority must attend a university or college that is accredited by an agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or the United States Department of Education. As well, the college must have a Delta Sigma Theta organization. Currently, there are over 940 chapters.

Student Status

A female student needs to have completed at least 24 semester hours or 36 quarter hours to be eligible for membership. As well, the student needs to be completing courses that lead to a baccalaureate degree or an equivalent. Thus, students pursuing an associate's, master's or second bachelor's degree are not eligible for membership. This student must also not be a member of another sorority or other society that has membership in the National Pan-Hellenic Council or Panhellenic Conference.

GPA

Delta Sigma Theta wants girls with a good grade point average (GPA). Thus, they require a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 if the school is on the 4.0 scale or a 1.75 if the school is on a 3.0 scale. However, if the school requires a higher minimum GPA, then the student must meet that requirement. If your GPA is below that number, work to improve your GPA to at least the minimum before attempting to join Delta Sigma Theta.

Rush

Meeting all the requirements doesn't guarantee you admittance into Delta Sigma Theta. Like other girls hoping to join a sorority, you must go through the rush process, which involves meeting members of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority and making a good impression. As well, these requirements are the minimum necessary for consideration. Girls with higher GPAs, a record of community service and other positive attributes have a higher chance of gaining an invite to join Delta Sigma Theta.
