Find Unclaimed Money In Kansas

Every year Kansas residents lose track of bank accounts, brokerage accounts, stock certificates, tax refunds and other financial assets. When that happens, those abandoned assets are turned over to the state of Kansas, where it is the job of the unclaimed property department to attempt to reunite those assets with their rightful owners. The state of Kansas currently holds $187 million in unclaimed assets, and the state treasurer provides a number of ways for residents to claim a chunk of that cash.

Instructions

1. Log on to the Kansas Unclaimed Property website. This site serves as a resource for individuals whose assets have been abandoned and turned over to the department. If you prefer, you can search by phone by calling the Kansas Unclaimed Property department at 800-432-0386 or 785 296-4165. If you prefer to check for unclaimed assets by mail, you can do so by writing to the state treasurer at:

Kansas State Treasurer

Topeka, Kansas 66612-1235

You can also start the claim process by sending an email to unclaimed@treasurer.ks.gov.

2. Click the "Search for Property" link on the right hand side of the screen. Enter your last name or the name of your company if you are searching for business assets. Enter your first name and click the "Search for Properties" button. Click "OK" at the confirmation screen.

3. Review the results of your search and click the "Request Folder" box for any property you believe belongs to you. Click the "Get Claim Forms" button to continue.

4. Create an account by choosing a user name and password to access the site. Click the claim forms link and follow the instructions for completing the form and getting your property. Be sure to read the claim form carefully and submit the backup documentation necessary to process your claim. You need to provide your Social Security number or Federal ID as well as the mailing address of each claimant. If the value of the unclaimed property exceeds $2,000, the claim form needs to be notarized.
