The GMAT is a required entrance exam for most people planning to pursue a career in business or management. Most colleges and universities that offer an MBA require two basic exams from their applicants: the MBA and the TOEFL for non-English speaking students. These exams not only help determine what the student has learned so far in school, but it also determines the student's potential to learn in the university setting.
GMAT
The GMAT, which stands for Graduate Management Admissions Test, was designed as a qualifying test for those interested in studying business and management. Many, but not all business schools offering an MBA, require applicants to take the GMAT exam. The exam is administered in English and consists of three main sections. These three sections measure verbal, mathematical and writing skills and assess your qualification for studying business. Your GMAT scores are good for five years after you take the exam.
TOEFL
You will be required to take the TOEFL, which stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language, if you plan to attend a college or university that gives its instruction in English. This exam is also necessary because the GMAT is only offered in English. According to the TOEFL website, more than 7,500 colleges and institutions accept TOEFL scores. Depending on the location where you take the test, you can choose to take an Internet-based test or a paper-based test.
Preparing for the GMAT
You must fully understand the format and the sections of the GMAT to be prepared on exam day. The GMAT website offers a variety of resources for anyone preparing for the GMAT including free downloadable prep software, a preparation checklist, a downloadable paper test and a writing assessment. There are also prep books available at stores that you can buy. If it has been a long time since you have practiced math, hire a tutor or buy a book and refresh your math skills. The GMAT website recommends that you allow at least four weeks to prepare for the GMAT.
Preparing for the TOEFL
You can download free sample test questions and a list of test tips from the TOEFL website. The website also offers a number of books, online practice pamphlets and CD's for sale. These programs are full of resources that determine your English reading level and help you track your progress when learning English as a second language. If you struggle in English, consider hiring a tutor and prepare for at least four weeks before taking the exam.
