Medical Schools in the Pacific Northwest


The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the demand for physicians and surgeons will increase by 22 percent through 2018, resulting in the creation of 144,100 jobs. To fill these new positions and practice medicine in the United States, prospective doctors must begin their medical training by attending a medical school with accreditation by the American Medical Association (AMA). As of 2010, there are 131 medical schools in the United States, including three universities in the Pacific Northwest region.


University of Washington Medical School


Founded in 1946 and located in Seattle, the University of Washington School has the distinction of being ranked by the U.S. News and World Report, from 1994 to 2009, as the leading school in primary care medical education. The school is home to approximately 870 medical students and 1,100 residents and fellows. Prerequisites for admission to the university include four semesters of social science or humanities, six semesters in biology and chemistry and two semesters in physics. For the 2008-2009 school year, the cost of one year's tuition at the University of Washington School of Medicine was $19,122 for in-state students and $45,527 for out-of-state students.

Oregon Health & Science University


When founded in 1887 in its Portland location, Oregon Health & Science University became the first medical in the Pacific Northwest. Home to 528 students, the university received the ranking of third Best Medical School for Primary Care in 2009 by the U.S. News and World Report. The academic requirements include one year of biology with a course in genetics, one year of physics, one mathematics course, two years of humanities and social sciences, with at least one course in English, and one course in general chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry. For the 2009-2010 school year, one year of tuition was $31,725 for residents of Oregon and $44,881 for nonresidents.

University of California Davis School of Medicine


Situated in Sacramento, the University of California Davis School of Medicine was founded in 1966. In the U.S. News and World Report ranking for 2009, the university received thirty-fifth place for primary care medicine. Enrollment at the medical school is the lowest amongst the Pacific Northwest Schools, at 402. For admission, the school requires one year of study in English, one and a half years of biology, one year of general chemistry, one year of organic chemistry, one year of physics and one year of college-level mathematics. The university will consider applicants without a bachelor's degree who meet the prerequisites, provided they have completed three total years of undergraduate education. For the 2008-2009 school year, tuition was free for California residents and $12,245 for out-of-state students.
