Send International Payments With Western Union

The amount that you intend to send overseas may change due to the exchange rate. A hundred dollars in the United States may equal more or less in another country. Before sending money internationally via Western Union, do research to find out just how much money the recipient will receive. The fees to send money through Western Union will also change with the amount you send and where you send it to.

Instructions

Estimate Exchange Rate and Fees

1. Go to Western Union's "Estimate Money Transfer Fees" tool online.

2. Select the country that you're sending money from, enter your city, state and zip code, choose to send money to a person or biller or government agency, and select the recipient's country from the drop-down menu.

3. Enter the amount you want to send in the "Amount I Am Sending" field. Western Union will return the exchange rate and the estimated local pay out rate, and the cost to send the money. For example, if you send $100 to Australia, the estimated pay out would be $93.67 (as of April 2011). All available services are listed with the associated cost. For instance, Money in Minutes is the only service available for United States customers who want to send money to a recipient in Australia.

Online

4. Go to Western Union's website and select "Send Money" from the homepage.

5. Log in or register for an account. To register, enter your full name, address and phone number. Then enter the security code, email address, select a user name and password, and choose three security questions and answers.

6. Verify your identity. Western Union will send a code by mail in two to four days or by phone the same day. Once the code is received, follow the instructions to enter the code.

7. Enter your user name and password in the corresponding fields.

8. Enter the city, address and zip code that you want to send money from. Select the country that you want to send money to.

9. Enter the dollar amount that you want to send and select "Calculate." Select the transfer option and fees. Enter the recipient's full name, your credit or debit card and press the send option. Western Union will return a Money Control Transfer Number. Write this number down and give it to the recipient.

Phone or In Person

10. Go in person to a nearby Western Union location or call Western Union at 1-800-225-5227.

11. Request to send funds internationally.

12. Complete a Money Transfer Form, if sending money in person. If sending by phone, the representative will ask questions that are similar to those found on the form. You will need to submit your full name, address and phone, and the recipient's full name and country. You must also state the amount that you want to send, select a transfer option (e.g., Money in Minutes or Next Day), and agree to the fees.

13. Pay for the money transfer with a debit or credit card by phone. In person, you must pay with cash, debit or credit card.

14. Write down the Money Control Transfer Number and give it to the recipient.
