An independent college consultant needs to have strong communication skills.








The college selection and application process can be overwhelming and time-consuming for students and their families. Independent college consultants provide valuable advice to help students select colleges and apply for and seek financial aid. Professionals with experience in college admissions or recruiting have an advantage but with the proper education, research and networking, newcomers can successfully compete in this business.

1. Research the market for an independent college consulting company. Look at any competing companies and determine what makes them successful. Think about ways that you will be able to compete within this market. Research the demographics of your target market.


2. Become an expert in the industry. If you have not worked at top educational institutions in admissions or recruiting , you will need to gain the necessary expertise by pursuing a degree in education. Pursue your masters degree and even a doctorate if you seek to become a well-respected consultant in the industry.


3. Take certification classes to become a certified educational planner. Add this certification to your masters or doctoral degree in education and you are on your way to becoming a respected college consultant.








4. Acquire the necessary skills to advise clients on financing their children's education. Many consultants become certified public accountants (CPAs) or certified financial planners to boost their credibility in the financial areas of their consulting practice.


5. Familiarize yourself with the colleges and universities into which your target market will seeking admission. Visit colleges and network with admissions' officials at as many colleges and universities as possible. The more you become familiar with them, the more effective you will be as a consultant.


6. Attend conferences and other workshops directed toward college consultants. This will provide you with valuable trade skills and networking opportunities.


7. Attend college fairs to network with college-bound students and their parents. Advertise your services in college guides. Many magazines publish college ratings or reviews periodically. Advertise in those publications during the time they run these reviews.
