Fill Out Fafsa Online

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is an application for students to apply for federal grants and loans to help pay for their higher education. FAFSA forms are available on most high school and college campuses and may be completed and returned by mail. Parents and students also have the option to complete the application online. There is some information that you must have before you can complete your application. Once you obtain that information, you can fill out and submit your FAFSA completely online.

Instructions

1. Gather necessary information before you begin your FAFSA application. Know your dependency status. You must have the school codes for the institutions where you want to send your FAFSA; you can use FAFSA's Federal School Code Search tool. Apply for a PIN number. This allows you to electronically sign your FAFSA application. Last, check application deadlines to make sure you haven't missed the cutoff date for the semester you would like to receive federal aid. You may also need yours or your parents' tax forms to complete the income information on the FAFSA.

2. Go to: www.fafsa.ed.gov and select the "Fill Out Your FAFSA" option under "Filing a FAFSA." Fill in each category. Categories include Student Demographics, School Selection, Dependency Status, Parent Demographics and Financial Information. The financial information will be based on your and/or your parents' income on their tax forms. Dependency status will be determined by a series of questions concerning your age and whether or not you are claimed as a dependent on your parents' tax forms.

3. Submit your application and sign it. You can sign your FAFSA with your PIN number. If you requested your email instantly online, your PIN number will be on your confirmation page. If requested by email, the PIN number will be available in your email within minutes. If you requested that your PIN number be sent to you via postal mail, it may take up to a week before you receive your PIN and can sign your online application.
