Improve Foreign Language Skills

Learning a foreign language can open up new worlds for you, both personally and professionally. Travel abroad with confidence by studying the language of your destination, or stand out among job applicants with your foreign language skills. Learning a language takes practice, exposure and a willingness to learn from mistakes. Improve your fluency by seeking as many opportunities as possible to speak your new language.

Instructions

1. Subscribe to a newspaper in the language you want to speak, or read one on the Internet. Use a dictionary to help you with new words and incorporate them into your vocabulary.

2. Listen to radio stations or watch TV news channels in your target language. Even if you don't understand every word, you will be able to piece together the meaning. Listen to music in your second language and sing along.

3. Watch movies in your target language without subtitles. Afterward, write a review in the language of the movie.

4. Join a language club that has members who are fluent in the foreign language. This is a great way to meet people and practice. In conversation, aim for fluency and listening comprehension rather than perfect grammar or vocabulary.

5. Find a person who speaks your target language and offer to teach him English in exchange for teaching you your target language.
