Entry Requirements For An Mba

Every school has different entry requirements for its Master of Business Administration (MBA) program. These requirements are typically listed on the school's website, making it easy to review them prior to deciding whether to apply for the program. Even though specific entry requirements for an MBA vary by school, there are many general requirements used in the admissions process.

Business Foundations Courses

Some schools require students to complete business foundations courses before they are officially admitted into their MBA program. These schools accept students without a business background on a conditional basis, pending their successful completion of specified prerequisite courses designed to strengthen their business background. These courses vary by school but often include undergraduate level courses such as accounting, finance, marketing, statistics and calculus.

Application

All schools require students to complete an application for admission. Students will be asked to provide basic information such as their name, address, undergraduate school information and employment history.

Transcripts

Most schools require students to submit official transcripts from the university where they received their undergraduate degree and any other graduate degrees they have already earned. Students are typically able to request official, sealed transcripts from their alma maters or ask for them to be sent directly to the university at which they are applying for admission.

GMAT Scores

Most schools require students to take the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Candidates will need to request that the testing company sends a copy of their scores straight to the university at which they are applying for admission. Some schools require students to receive a minimum score on this exam to be considered for admission, while others simply request that students take it.

Letters of Recommendation

Many schools require students to submit letters of recommendation as part of the application process. The number of required letters varies, but is typically between 1-3. Schools have different criteria for who can write these letters, but it is usually favorable to have recommendations from employers, former professors, or leaders of charitable organizations at which candidates volunteer.

Admissions Essays

Most schools require students to complete essays as part of the application process. The number and scope of these essays varies according to each school. It is important for the applicant to put a great deal of effort into them, as the admissions committee will use the essays in their decision of whether or not to admit the student into the MBA program at the school.
