A fashion design career requires several skills that will greatly enhance one's chances of success in the field. Because the industry is so vast, different types of jobs lend themselves to various skill sets. The fashion design industry doesn't require a college degree, although one is favored.
Tasks
A fashion designer is tasked with designing garments for commercial sale to suit a particular demographic group. The designer uses his or her artistic expertise combined with garment construction technique to create wearable apparel.
Creating Designs
Most designers create clothing for mass consumption that will be produced in many different varieties and sizes. Most of these designers use fashion design computer programs to create apparel. Other designers work for high-end design studios that will sell a comparatively small amount of clothing. These designers use a less automated, more customized process of drawing and producing.
Time Frame
A degree in fashion design can help with the job hunt, though it's not necessary. A four-year bachelor's of art or science degree in fashion design is good, although some people have obtained internships with a few years of personal design and sewing experience.
Geography
In the United States, living near a big city makes it easier to break into fashion design. Los Angeles is one option, but New York City is the garment center of the nation. Most of the top textile and sales companies, events and shows occur in New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
Misconceptions
The best designers come from a variety of backgrounds. A person doesn't have to be rich, a talented sewer or flamboyantly stylish to be a designer. The best designers work hard, think creatively and are grounded. Fashion design is rarely glamorous in the early years, and patience is a must.
