Senior citizens can attend college tuition-free in some places.
In the field of education, a grant is money from a fund given to a student for the purpose of helping finance a college or university education. Senior citizens can apply for government and non-government grants and many colleges and universities throughout the U.S. allow senior citizens to attend institutions for free. There are usually certain stipulations, such as residency in the state where the institution is located.
Grant-Funded GED Program
A portion of the senior population in the U.S. never completed high school. For example, when manufacturing jobs were plentiful, a high school education was not necessary for employment. Delaware Community College--located in the counties of Delaware and Chester, Pennsylvania--offers a grant-funded general educational diploma program that is ideal for senior citizens. Classes are open to anyone 18 or over who desires to improve basic reading, writing and math skills at the precollege level. This school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Grant for Mature Women
In 1916 Jeannette Rankin became the first woman to be elected to the U.S. Congress. In her will she bequeathed a portion of her estate to helping "mature, unemployed women workers." The Jeannette Rankin Foundation was founded in 1976--three years after her death--using $16,000 in seed money. Women must be 35 years of age or older and meet low income guidelines to be eligible for this program.
