The process of applying for a new job can often be overwhelming, as every company differs when it comes to what type of material they expect you to submit. For many jobs, you will be expected to prepare a personal statement, which is often referred to as a cover letter. This statement is typically the first information your potential employer will read about you; therefore, it is important that you tailor the statement to the specific job and make it as clear and impressive as possible.
Instructions
1. Write your personal statement's introduction. Open with a quote, fact about yourself or an otherwise eye-catching piece of information, then explain who you are and what position you are applying for. If you have a personal reference to this job, mention that reference in the introduction.
2. Write the body of your personal statement, which may be one or more paragraphs. Your personal statement should fit single-spaced on one page. Rather than summarizing the information already found on your resume, consider a few of the specific qualifications demanded by the job you are applying for and point them out, then reference your own skills or accomplishments that prove you to be the ideal candidate for the job.
3. Write the conclusion of your personal statement, which should restate your interest in the position and your belief that you are the best candidate. Mention that you are interested in moving to the next level in applying for this job (usually an interview), and thank the recipient for his time and consideration.
4. Read your personal statement aloud. Check not only for grammar errors, but that every sentence sounds natural and your statement flows from one idea to the next, just as an essay is expected to. Revise your statement as needed.
