Students at Detroit alternative high schools have access to computer and technical courses.
Detroit Public Schools offers a range of alternative high schools. Many cater to students who have a difficult time succeeding in a traditional learning environment and have special needs or learning, discipline and attendance problems. The other alternative schools cater to specific groups of students. These include same-sex schools and schools for gifted students and teen mothers. If a student is struggling at her current school, her parents can look into one of these alternatives.
Detroit City High School
Detroit City High School is an 11-month school that provides education for students who exhibit "dropout" behaviors. The school focuses on strengthening learning skills, reinforcing positive behavior and preparing students for careers. Detroit City High School also offers weekend school, conflict resolution, mentoring family groups and tutoring. High school dropouts who would like to return to school can join the Fast Track Transition Program at Detroit City High, which allows students ages 17 to 20 to return and complete high school quickly while preparing for college or technical training.

Detroit International Academy for Young Women
The Detroit International Academy for Young Women is an all-female, African-centered school that provides a college preparatory curriculum with an emphasis on science, technology, mathematics and leadership development. The academy offers foreign languages, journalism, art and honors courses. Students also can take part in after-school programs including cheerleading, debate, Young Entrepreneurs and literary arts. Applicants must have at least a 2.0 grade-point average, no significant code infractions and a letter of recommendation and do well in a personal interview and skill assessment.

Douglass Academy for Young Men
The Douglass Academy for Young Men, the only all-male public school in the state, offers a variety of educational opportunities including art enrichment, technology, robotics, journalism, foreign language and accelerated reading and math. The academy encourages leadership and personal development by inviting students to take part in activities such as a manhood program, science club, honor roll and student council.

Ferguson Academy for Young Women
The Ferguson Academy for Young Women provides an enriching education for gifted students succeeding academically beyond their current grade level. Enrollment at Ferguson is also open to pregnant and parenting young women. Small class sizes allow for more personal attention and mentoring. Qualified students can participate in accelerated education options enabling them to graduate more quickly. The academy also offers sports, choir, after-school tutoring and college and career preparatory courses.

Trombly Alternative High School
Trombly Alternative High School focuses on students who require further assistance and receive extra support through small class sizes. The school also works with autistic and other special-needs students. Trombly offers courses that prepare students for careers and college, including technology and IT programs. Students can also participate in programs including choir, drama and sports.

West Side Academy Alternative Education
West Side Academy provides student in grades 9 through 12 with nontraditional curriculum choices and a four-day school week. Students can earn up to 40 credit hours per semester, and when they complete the required curriculum, they can take career and technical training courses. West Side Academy also offers a school safety program, choir, music, science and math lab, as well as after-school tutoring and recreational programs.
