Write A Resume For A College Application

A college application doesn't often ask for a resume, but if yours does, don't be intimidated. A resume gives you the opportunity to showcase your academic achievements and what you can do for the college. Common sections for college resumes include personal information, a brief purpose or personal statement, education information, activities, honors, skills and employment. Always carefully read your college application directions. Colleges may expect different formats or sections for your college resume.

Instructions

1. Use your name, address, phone number and email address as your heading. You may want to use a bigger point font size for your name. The rest of the information in your resume should be a consistent 12-point font size.

2. Write a brief purpose or biography. More conventional resumes use a single-sentence purpose. However, the website Accepted to College recommends a three-sentence biography where you underscore your greatest achievements.

3. List your high school information. Include the name of your high school and list your class rank, grade point average and the year you graduated (or will graduate). If you're transferring, you'll also need to include the name of your college or community college and your grade point average.

4. List your activities. Put any involvement in community service, sports, programs or clubs under this heading. Describe your role and the duration you participated.

5. List any honors and awards. Any distinction you've received during high school or at other colleges are appropriate to include.

6. List your skills. If you have any foreign language, computer or research skills, list them in this section.

7. Outline your employment history. While colleges are more concerned with your academic potential, adding your work experience won't hurt. Include your position, duties and length of employment.

8. Proofread your resume. Using proper grammar and spelling is paramount. Making a grammatical error may give admission officers the impression of carelessness. Recruit friends and family to proofread your resume as well.
