Grants and scholarships can help students pursue a career in cosmetology.
Several scholarships and grants are available to students wishing to pursue a career in cosmetology, makeup, or hairdressing. Some of them are designed for students already enrolled in beauty schools; others are for college-bound applicants.
The Joe Francis Haircare Scholarship
The Joe Francis Haircare Scholarship Foundation has several scholarships for students enrolled in cosmetology or barbering schools. A number of $1,000 grants are awarded annually, depending on the amount of funding available that year; 20 were given in 2010. Requests to be submitted between January 1 and June 1 each year should include a completed application, a one-page personal essay stating financial need, interests, family history, and reasons for pursuing a this career track. One or two letters of recommendation must also be submitted.

The American Health and Beauty Aid Institute
The American Health and Beauty Aid Institute offers a scholarship opportunity to beauty-school students through the Fred Luster, Sr. Education Foundation. Scholarships between $500 and $5,000 are awarded. Eligibility requirements include: 85% or higher in their current coursework (at least 300 hours completed). Factors such as attendance, previous awards, and extracurricular activites are taken into account. To be considered for the 2011 award year, applications must be submitted no later then November 30, 2010, together with two letters of recommendation. AHBAI also offers a college-bound scholarship.

Westmore Academy of Cosmetic Arts Makeup Scholarship
Westmore Academy and the American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS) jointly offer the Westmore Academy of Cosmetic Arts Makeup Scholarship. This scholarship is made available for postgraduate students who are looking to advance their career and work towards becoming a make-up artist. Among the criteria: graduation from an AACS-accredited school with an attendance record and grade point average of 80% or higher; letters from recommendation from both the school and an instructor; a 500-word essay about why you dream of becoming a makeup artist; proof of passing the state licensing exam; and a telephone interview with the Westmore Academy faculty. A committee of Westmore faculty and staff selects the winners of the twelve scholarships awarded each year.
