When attending college, you may find out that the university doesn't fulfill your career path or that it simply isn't the college you want to finish you degree at. If another college meets your preferences better for a specific major and degree, then you can complete an academic transfer. When transferring to a new university, many of the credits you've already earned from courses you've completed can be transferred as well. Also, you must make sure you have an acceptable grade point average in order to get accepted to the new college.
Instructions
1. Research the college you want to transfer to by visiting the college's website. Determine what major you want to transfer into so that you know what prerequisites are involved. Knowing your major is important for determining if you have any credits that will transfer to go toward you major at the new university.
2. Contact the university you want to transfer to, and ask to be directed to the department that deals with academic transfers. Most campuses will direct you to a counselor or admissions adviser.
3. Ask the representative where you can locate more transfer information on the college's website and also have transfer material sent to you. The admissions adviser will be able to help begin the process that is specific to the university you want to transfer to.
4. Make an appointment with your adviser at your current college, and let him know that you are planning to transfer. Ask to receive a copy or your transcript to send to the new university or, often, the adviser can send your transcript for you.
5. Complete the application for the university you want to transfer to before the application deadline. You may need to include transcript information, letters of recommendation and a personal statement. You will then eventually receive a letter that lets you know whether you are accepted or not.
6. Visit your new adviser before attending classes at your new university in order to make sure you know what academic credits have been transferred and how they will count toward your major.
