Take Advantage of Public Library Services
Public libraries are more than just books. Technology has transformed public libraries from book warehouses to electronic information centers. As institutions of social service, libraries offer a wide range of self-improvement programs and services to the public. Review the information below to make the most out of your local public library.
Instructions
1. Visit your public library Web site to learn all you can about the range of library services. Learn about the resources available to you and the policies for use.
2. Get a library card. If you don't already have one, bring a photo ID and proof of current address to the library. You'll probably need to fill out an application and provide proper supporting documents to obtain a card. If you already have a card, make sure it's still active and that you don't have any outstanding fines.
3. Check out the community calendar. Public libraries offer a series of events, meetings, training sessions and other activities for the community. Most are free, but check for fee information and enrollment procedures.
4. Hone your computer skills. While most libraries have computers with Internet access available for public use, they also offer training on use various computer programs.
5. Reserve a meeting room. Most libraries allow patrons to use reading rooms for personal use. You may reserve a room for a one on one tutoring session or to hold a special meeting or event. Review the library's terms of use to learn more.
6. Access other library collections, and check out materials from another public library. Interlibrary services allow patrons to borrow books from other city libraries.
7. Go beyond books. Public libraries house volumes of audio visual material. From DVDs to LPs, be sure to browse the collection.
