Georgia Tech
is one of the most highly regarded technical colleges in the United States, and consequently, applications for admission far exceed the university's capacity for new students. The college has established application processes for freshmen, transfer, international and nondegree-seeking students.
Introduction
The Georgia Institute of Technology is located in Atlanta. Consistently rated one of the top 10 public colleges in the United States by U.S. News and World Report, the university offers graduate and undergraduate degree programs in engineering, architecture, computer science, management, the sciences and the liberal arts. Georgia Tech is home to about 19,000 students.
Freshman Admission
Every year, Georgia Tech admits about 2,600 freshmen students out of an applicant pool of more than 10,000. Admission standards are strenuous. Admission officials evaluate four aspects of each applicant's background to determine if he is suited to study at Georgia Tech. The four areas of consideration are: The applicant's high school grade-point average, which is refigured by the admissions office by taking into account how well the student performed on the core curriculum, but also by giving added weight to advance placement classes; SAT test scores of at least 590 in critical reading and at least 650 in math, or ACT test scores of at least 26 in English and 29 in math; the student's leadership and activity record; and a personal essay. Students must complete an application online or on paper, provide supporting documentation and pay a nonrefundable application fee. Deadlines differ, depending on whether the student seeks regular admission or is also applying for scholarships.
Transfer Admission
Far more students apply to transfer to Georgia Tech than the university can accommodate, so the transfer admission process is very selective. A student wishing to transfer from another college must have completed a minimum of 30 transferable semester or 45 quarterly hours, which must include required courses for graduation and in the student's major course of study, and carry a minimum GPA of 2.7 for residents of the state of Georgia or 3.0 for non-Georgia residents. Students seeking to transfer into the biomedical or mechanical engineering programs have to carry a higher GPA because those programs are highly competitive. Furthermore, students who wish to transfer to the Savannah, Georgia, campus must have completed certain additional courses, depending on their majors. Transfer students must complete an application, provide supporting documentation and pay a nonrefundable application fee.
International Student Admission
International applicants can enter Georgia Tech as freshmen or as transfer students. For freshman application, the student must meet the criteria established for all freshmen plus provide financial information to prove they can afford to pay for their education and provide proof of immigration status. International transfer students must meet all the criteria for any transfer applicant, including the number of college hours completed in required courses and in the student's major, and carry a GPA of at least 3.5. International students cannot enter Georgia Tech without having chosen a major course of study. The student must complete a transfer application, provide transcripts, financial and immigration status documentation, and pay a nonrefundable application fee.
Nondegree-seeking Student Admission
Georgia Tech also has several classifications of admission for students who wish to attend the college but who are not seeking a degree. Such students apply using the transfer student application, which has blocks indicating the student is seeking special or transient status. The applicant must provide all pertinent supporting information indicated on the application, plus the admission fee. Transient or special admission is for a single semester only. To stay on at Georgia Tech, the student must apply at the end of each term for admission to the next.
