Become an Army Colonel
The decision to join the army is often one steeped in great pride for the United States and a desire to protect and serve the country. However, just like any profession, the need for advancement within the army is just as strong as those in civilian life. Reaching colonel status is something many army personnel strive for but do not reach, given the political and career maneuvering necessary to succeed. Follow these steps to aid the army enthusiast in becoming an army colonel and realize their military dreams.
Instructions
1. Begin by researching the army and deciding whether your personality is well suited for the army commitment. Make an appointment with an army recruiter and get a feel for the organization before making any commitments.
2. Serve your term in basic training and perform your duties well. Excel in this initial training since it will help your career later. Choose a development program and specialty area in which you will be assigned to learn and develop your expertise in a specific area.
3. Know that it takes approximately 17 years to become properly groomed for the position as colonel. Strive to get a position as platoon leader and continue your education past your initial training to prepare you and your resume for later colonel development.
4. Execute your position as Major well. It will be the first significant stepping stone into a Lt. Colonel position, which should happen in around the 10th to 12th year of service. Ensure that you meet all qualifications as outlined by your respective branch during your tenure as major to be eligible for colonel promotion.
5. Be patient and aware of the promotional flow of the army system. Typically it takes 18 months to reach lieutenant, four years for captain, 10 years for major status, 16 for lieutenant colonel and approximately 20 to 22 years for colonel. Make it your business to stay updated on relevant news and changes in policy that could effect your promotion and most importantly be patient as it is a long process.
