Make An Eye Gaze Frame

Eye gaze frames help disabled individuals communicate.

An eye gaze frame is an effective tool to help people with physical, intellectual or communication disabilities to communicate. The middle of the frame is open so that you can look directly at the person. When you ask a question, the person only has to look at an image mounted on the periphery of the frame to answer you. Depending on what he looks at, you will know his answer. Although eye gaze frames are low-tech, the gazing technique learned by the disabled person translates into using high-tech computer programs in which electronic cameras detect eye movement for input.

Instructions

1. Connect three 18-inch PVC pipes with two elbow connectors to make a three-sided frame. All the pipes should be on the same plane and it should lay flat when placed on a table.

2. Glue a PVC endcap with the hole facing up in the middle of a wooden block cut from a 2-by-4 board. The block should be 5 inches long. Glue the endcap on one of the broad sides.

3. Place the wooden blocks with the endcaps facing up on a table. Insert the free ends of the three-sided PVC pipe frame into the endcaps on the wooden blocks. The result should be a standing three-sided frame.

4. Outline the PVC pipe frame on one side with the loop (fuzzy) side of self-adhesive hook-and-loop tape. Cut the hook (prickly) side of the tape into smaller pieces and stick a piece on the back of pictures, letters, colored squares or other small objects. Place two or more of these objects on the eye gaze frame at a time.
