Types Of Design Technology Teaching Jobs

Design technology instruction requires the use of computers.

Design technology teachers must be up-to-date on the latest advances in their areas of specialty. Someone who teaches design technology should have a strong command of basic and advanced design principles. Schools and universities also call for candidates who have proven skills in industry standard computer applications because the basic goal of any design technology instructor is properly preparing students to enter the workforce, or eventually build their own successful firms. Since the branches of computer-aided design are numerous, many types of technology teaching jobs exist in a variety of educational settings.

Secondary Design Technology Teachers

The teaching of design technology skills occurs in some secondary schools. Teachers with technologically savvy backgrounds in specialties like furnishing, textile or industrial design, engineering and graphics may find permanent positions teaching design technology in a secondary school. Public secondary school design technology teachers hold teaching credentials or special permits that verify their professional experience. Private schools may only require a bachelor's degree.

Vocational Design Technology Instructor

Students may elect to gain computer design skills in private or public vocational education setting. Those who are interested in teaching design technology skills at the vocational level sometimes need special state certification to do so. Vocational design technology instructors who work with adults offer their students instruction on a wide variety of computerized design applications, such as computer-aided drafting software.

University Design Technology Instructor

University design technology instructors are often leaders in their design specialty. Special permits or credentials don't usually apply to these positions. However, higher learning institutions will require advanced educations and lots of professional experience. Those who teach at the community college level may need to have a master's degree in a design-related subject.
