With over 40,000 students enrolled at five sites all over Manhattan and online, New York University provides undergraduate and graduate degrees to college students in New York City and beyond. The New York University Graduate School offers over a 1,000 graduate and doctorate degrees in 15 departments and as of 2010 had an enrollment of 17,000 students. Function
Graduate students attending NYU can expect to pay on average $30,000 a year in tuition and fees. Room and board, books and other expenses can easily add on an additional $25,000 a year. To help defray the large expenses of obtaining a graduate degree at NYU, students can apply for a number of scholarships. Unlike student loans, scholarship money does not have to be paid back after graduation and can be used for tuition, books and other educational fees.
Sources
Students wishing to apply for NYU graduate scholarships can find them from a variety of sources. The NYU Office for National Scholarships helps students apply for and obtain several National Prestigious Scholarships, which come from private foundations and trusts. Each of the 15 graduate schools and departments also give out scholarships to students pursuing degrees in that particular school.
Types
Scholarships for NYU graduate students come in several forms, including traditional scholarships, grants, fellowships and assistantships. Assistantships, like the Graduate School of Arts and Science Residential Education Assistantship, often give the student scholarship money in exchange for part-time work. Some graduate departments, such as the Graduate School of Arts and Science, offer a Tuition Incentive Program, in which NYU will match the amount of outside scholarships and awards a student receives, essentially doubling a student's scholarship money.
Features
Graduate scholarships differ in monetary amounts from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars. For example, the Kenshin Oshima Scholarship for NYU MBA students provides $50,000 to a first-year MBA student and $100,000 to a second-year student, while the Ilene Kaplan Memorial Scholarships gives $5,000 to an MBA student. Many of the national scholarships go specifically to different types of students, including minority, international and immigrant students.
Qualifications
Because most of the NYU graduate scholarships come from individual schools and departments, students applying for those scholarships must be enrolled in that department or school. Once a student is admitted to a particular school or department, she is automatically considered for many of that school's scholarships, as is with the Silver School of Social Work Tuition Scholarship. Other general requirements include maintaining a minimum grade point average, demonstrating financial need and showing academic merit.
