Harvard Business School Requirements

Harvard has different requirements than many business schools.

In 2010, Harvard Business School, or HBS, was ranked as the country's top business school by "U.S. News and World Report." Harvard Business School was founded in 1908, making it one of the oldest management programs in the United States. Harvard Business School is also known for the somewhat different way it chooses its students.

A Habit of Leadership

Harvard Business School looks for leaders in every walk of life. Extracurricular activities in college, business achievements, personal accomplishments or leadership positions in the military--all are things HBS takes into account when assessing potential students' leadership abilities and potential. Leadership is essential to success at HBS and in life. Potential students must submit a portfolio that includes their accomplishments and any experiences that reflect their leadership abilities. Successful leadership can include starting your own business, spearheading a workplace initiative or directing a military combat squad.

Capacity for Intellectual Growth

HBS uses a case-based method of learning, which takes actual business models and asks student to study and find ways to make the business better. HBS expects student to be able to assess, analyze and act upon the complex and ambiguous information that comes with this method. In selecting its students, HBS also reviews prior academic performance and Graduate Management Assessment Test or Graduate Record Exam scores. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores may also be applicable. While no particular course of study is required, students must show an ability to understand analytical and quantitative concepts.

Engaged Community Citizenship

HBS looks for students who strive for the highest ethical standards. Respect and eagerness are key characteristics of HBS students and potential HBS students. No minimum work experience is required for the program, but prior experience in business and a college community are considered.
