Physical therapy is a discipline within health care that focuses on the study and rehabilitation of the human body. Patients meet with physical therapists when they suffer from movement impairments resulting from stiffness, muscular weakness, pain and impaired coordination. These conditions develop from injuries, fractures, strokes, disease or surgery. Physical therapists evaluate patients and perform physical exercises and stretches to improve circulation, strength and movement to an area. Career opportunities are available in hospitals, clinics and private practices.
Ohio State University
The physical therapy graduate program at Ohio State University offers a 3 year doctorate program. The Doctor of Physical Therapy program requires students to complete 156 hours of academic work and 40 weeks of clinical work. The physical therapy graduate program encourages students to have an undergraduate degree in exercise science or health related major. The program offers five clinical residencies in sports physical therapy, pediatric physical therapy, orthopaedic physical therapy, geriatric physical therapy and neurologic physical therapy.

University of Florida
The American Physical Therapy Association endorses the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at the University of Florida. This program ensures that graduates have the necessary education and experience to earn licensure and begin a career. The program focuses on behavioral, biological and kinesiological sciences. The academic portion of the program is eight weeks and is followed by 32 weeks of a clinical internship. The curriculum includes courses in functional anatomy, neuroscience in physical therapy, exercise physiology, health promotion and wellness, physical examination and evaluation and motor control.

University of Minnesota: Twin Cities
The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Minnesota: Twin Cities, offers a doctorate degree in physical therapy. The program combines a didactic and clinical curriculum. The didactic portion of the program lasts for the first two years and focuses on physical agents, basic science, treatment techniques, evaluation skills and biomedical principles. During the third year of the program, students participate in a full-time internship that allows them to work directly with patients under the supervision of professional physical therapists.
