There is nothing more rewarding than helping a child learn, particularly when that child has difficulty doing so Most children, however, with a little bit of patience, know-how and one-on-one assistance can learn when they wouldn't otherwise. That's where becoming a tutor comes in; it can be very rewarding to see a child who has difficulty learning reaping the benefits of your hard work.

Steps to Becoming a Special Education Tutor


1. Obtain good practical knowledge of several areas: children in general, how they learn, basic methods of teaching and how special education children can be different and challenging. You can gain this knowledge through classroom study or through your own life experiences.


2. Spend some time as a volunteer or aide inside a school assisting special education students. Knowledge of educate is not enough; there's a lot of things you will learn from being inside a classroom and working with students that you will never gain elsewhere.


3. Get to know parents of special education children. You can do this through the school or by joining a support group. This will give you the opportunity to understand their unique concerns as well as give you the opportunity to network with people who might be able to use your services.


4. Participate in the Special Olympics. It will allow you to begin to determine what type of child you feel you could work with and others who you might find too challenging. It is also another place that you can do some networking.


5. Advertise your tutoring status when you feel you have gained enough experience and knowledge to work with a special education child. Use the contacts you've made along to way to pave the road to your success.
