Apply For Federal Grant Money

The federal government lists most of its grants online.

Federal grants are available for a variety of purposes, from college education to nonprofit projects. Federal grants are often given to organizations or local or state governments. However, individuals can receive educational grants. The federal government has an online, searchable grants database at Grants.gov that is particularly useful in finding and applying for federal grants.

Instructions

1. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if you want federal grants to attend college. The amount of financial aid you can get will depend on your and your family's assets, income, financial obligations, household size and the number of students in college.

2. Apply for grants on Grants.gov. This site lists grants available mainly to organizations and state and local governments. Register to create an account and follow the instructions for applying for a particular grant online.

3. Read carefully through the eligibility requirements for any grant you apply for. This can save you time applying for grants you will not get.

4. Supply all required documentation and fill in as many blanks as possible on the grant application. Go over your application to ensure it is complete before you submit it. Contact the grant's contact representative if you have any questions about the grant or applying for it.

5. Review past grant recipients' information if it is available from the granting agency. Another option is to ask for a copy of the organization's annual report or other publication that lists its federal grantors. Read through the organizations' or individuals' background information. Contact the grantee to ask about challenges it faced in applying for the same grant you want to apply for or for any tips it has regarding the application process. Choose an organization or individual that received the grant and is not eligible to receive the grant during the same period you are applying to avoid having a competitive relationship.
