Register for ROTC to receive a college scholarship.
The Reserve Officers' Training Corps, or ROTC, trains college students to become officers in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard. If you choose to join ROTC, you pledge to serve a certain amount of time in the military after college; in return, you receive a college scholarship and leadership training. You receive classroom and physical training during your ROTC training course, and you receive a promotion and higher pay when you begin military service.
Instructions
1. Set up an appointment with your academic adviser, who is responsible for assisting you with career preparations. Ask the adviser if the school participates in the ROTC program. If so, tell the adviser you want to register for the program. The adviser will explain requirements and issue contact information to a ROTC recruiter. If the program is not available at your school, you will need to transfer to a school that offers ROTC if you want to participate.
2. Talk to a ROTC recruiter. The recruiter can familiarize you with the programs rules and requirements and discuss the benefits such as scholarships, health benefits and salaries. If you meet the requirements, the recruiter guides you through the process of registering to the ROTC program.
3. Choose a branch and the amount of time you want to serve. Recruiters do not prompt you right away to choose a branch. ROTC programs allow students to attend several branch courses before deciding whether to serve in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard. You can choose to serve for two, three or four years; the length of your service determines the amount of your scholarship.
4. Begin your training. After registering for ROTC, you take courses to learn about your selected branch of the military. You also take basic training, where you will learn the skills you need to serve.
