Caribbean Medical Colleges

Beautiful beaches, along with low tuition and reputable faculty, draw students to Caribbean medical schools.

Many people can be daunted by medical school's expensive price tag and time commitment. However, there are several medical colleges in the Caribbean that offer credible programs at tuition prices several thousand dollars lower than U.S. and Canadian universities. For many students, the lower price tag, small classroom setting and beautiful weather make the Caribbean an attractive alternative for medical school.

St. James School of Medicine

Saint James School of Medicine has campuses in both Bonaire, a part of the Netherlands Antilles, and Anguilla, a British overseas territory. Besides affordable tuition, students can benefit from small class sizes and experienced, trained professors.

The Bonaire campus offers three programs: premedical (premed) studies, a basic science MD program and a clinical science program. High school graduates and undergraduate students with fewer than 90 college credits are eligible to apply to the premedical studies program. Premed students must successfully complete four semesters of coursework before moving on to the basic science program. The basic science program requires a bachelor's degree, with a total of 90 undergraduate credits.

American Global University

The American Global University of Medicine attracts students and faculty from more than 85 countries around the world. The university's draw is its challenging curriculum, opportunities for clinical work, on-campus housing and competitively priced tuition.

Located in Curacao, a part of the Netherlands Antilles, the school offers a four-semester premedical program and 10-semester medical program (MD). While the bulk of the programs are taught on the university's Curacao and Belize campuses, the remaining six months of the MD program involves hands-on training at hospitals and medical centers in the United States.

All Saints University of Medicine

Located on the island of Aruba, All Saints University of Medicine boasts many of the qualities that attract students to Caribbean medical schools. In addition to having a low student to faculty ratio, merit-based scholarships are available to applicants with at least a 3.0 grade point average, an MCAT score of 27 or higher and a family income of less than $100,000 a year. Students who do not qualify for a scholarship can look into using special loans through either Valley National Bank or the National Bank of Canada to pay for the school's tuition. Students who have already completed premed participate in the four-year program.
