A thesis statement on literature is the main point of the paper or essay you are attempting to write. A thesis statement should state your main idea specifically along with the main points you wish to address. There are several ways to write a thesis statement on literature. Having a well-written thesis statement makes writing your paper or essay easier, because it is a short way of listing exactly what you will end up writing.
Instructions
1. Examine the assignment to make sure you know what you should be writing. If the assignment is for a thesis statement on its own, this is going to be different from an assignment that asks for a thesis statement along with an essay or paper.
2. Decide on your opinion or point of view regarding the literature assignment. In order to have a thesis, you must have an opinion or point of view; the thesis statement will state that opinion. Even if your opinion is, "This piece of literature is good," it is still an opinion. If your assignment asks for a specific type of essay, such as a comparison piece, or asks you to do something specific like chose a side in a literature debate, your answer for the assignment will be your opinion or point of view.
3. Decide on a few reasons or main points that you will address in your essay. For instance, if your main point is that Kurt Vonnegut wrote literature that can be considered timeless, choose a few examples of this. These are the points or examples that you will attempt to prove during your essay.
4. Write your thesis statement. Begin with the opinion or view you are taking. Then add the reasons you have listed as proof. This is your finished thesis statement.
