Getting Your Doctorate Through Distance Learning

Earning a doctorate degree online can be achieved with extensive research on different colleges.

With online education becoming a more popular option for schooling, many students choose this route for continuing their education. Distance learning allows business men and women to continue their education in a manner that fits their busy schedules and lifestyles. Getting your doctorate through distance learning is now a possibility for busy professionals all over the world.

Instructions

1. List the different characteristics you need in a distance learning school. Determine if you need schooling that is full-time or if you need a school with a couple of labs each week or month. Balancing time between family, work and education is important, so find a school that allows you to take as few or as many courses as you feel comfortable each semester.

2. Write down whether you need a college that is in close proximity to your home, or whether distance is not a main factor. Some individuals feel more comfortable attending a distance education program if they have the ability to visit the campus, purchase books in person and return books after completion of the semester. Being close to the campus also allows a distance education student to attending tutoring or special events on campus.

3. Draw a grid of different online colleges that offer doctorate degree programs online. Use the grid to add more information about each school in an organized fashion. Write down the name of the school, the cost per credit and the length of program. Also note the accreditations of these programs--this will be crucial when you are looking for a job post-graduation.

4. Research the specific prerequisite requirements for the doctorate programs you are most interested in. Verify that the degree you currently posses qualifies for the program.

5. Apply to two or three of these programs, and make sure to apply for financial aid or sponsorship for your education. Some employers may provide full education costs for employees. You will receive an acceptance letter or denial letter within two to four weeks from the institutions.

6. Look over the curriculum and requirements for the school you are accepted into. The distance learning institution will provide a layout of all of the courses that need to be completed to obtain a doctorate degree.

7. Separate the course list by semester to determine how many courses you want to take each semester and how long it will take to receive your doctorate in the program.

8. Register for courses that you intend to participate in the first semester. Review the required book list, and order books through the online bookstore. Ordering directions vary from institution to institution, so check in with your school's bookstore to make sure you order the right products.

9. Print out the course syllabus for each course, and layout a calendar for all of your classes to keep organized. Be sure to read the required material, and submit papers and tests before the specified due date.
