Emergency Student Grants

Even if you encounter an emergency in school, an emergency student grant can help you make it to graduation.

Because college students are typically struggling to pay for tuition expenses in addition to living costs, an emergency during college can be especially hard on the personal budget. Luckily, many colleges and private organizations understand this, so they offer emergency grants to offset financial problems when a crisis occurs in the life of a college student. According to CollegeScholarships.org, most universities require that you prove that your emergency situation exists, in addition to meeting certain GPA and enrollment requirements, before being approved for an emergency student grant. If you think you might qualify for this kind of funding, the resources below give you a place to begin.

University/College Grants

According to CollegeScholarships.org, many universities have emergency funds reserved for students in crisis. For this reason, the best place to start looking for emergency student grants is your college or university. Although most of these grants are small--under $1,000--and require extensive documentation of your emergency, they may be able to make the money available to you rather quickly. For instance, Washington State University offers emergency funds for international students who have unexpectedly lost funding. Other schools offer grants for individuals who have suffered a medical emergency or other extreme crisis.

NEED Grants

The Negro Educational Emergency Fund offers emergency grants to low-income students who have a financial need after they have been given all the financial aid assistance available to them at the state and national level. These grants can help students cover the gaps in this emergency financial situation that could keep the students from going to school.
