Scholarships For Minority College Students

In addition to grants and scholarships for everyone, there are also scholarships for minority college students. There are scholarships for people whose skin is all colors of the rainbow and come from any number of ethnic backgrounds. If you are a minority student or the parent of one, you should explore every available option for school funding.

African American Scholarships

There are a wide array of scholarships for African American students. African Americans represent 12 percent of the American population, making them the second-largest minority group in the United States. There are scholarships for all African American students, such as the African American Achievement Scholarship and the AXA Foundation Fund Achievement Scholarship. The Jackie Robinson Scholarship is a high-ticket scholarship offering $6,000 for African American students. There are also scholarships for African American students pursuing certain majors, such as engineering.

Hispanic Scholarships

There are also scholarships for the Latino community, America's largest minority group. Some scholarships are targeted to specific groups within the Hispanic community, such as the Chicana/Latina Foundation Scholarship Program. Others, such as Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards are for any member of the Latin American community in the United States seeking money for college. This award is awarded regionally to high school juniors who have demonstrated academic excellence with an unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Asian American Scholarships

Asian American students will find no shortage of scholarships. The Asian American community boasts the highest retention rate at the college level in the United States. U.S. Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce offers scholarships from donors such as Pepsi and FedEx. There are other Pan-Asian scholarships such as the Bruce Lee Scholarship and the Jackie Chan Scholarship, both of which are available for those who win an essay contest.

Native American Scholships

There are a variety of scholarships available for the first inhabitants of the United States, the Native Americans. Students who apply for such scholarships must be members of federally recognized tribes. There are a number of scholarships awarded by the American Indian College Fund and the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Daughters of the American Revolution American Indian Scholarship Fund also provides money for college to Native American students.
