Scholarships For Snowboarders

Snowboarding scholarships can be found all over the country.

Just like student-athletes in many other sports, students proficient in snowboarding can use their athletic talents to garner money for college. While not as widely available or well-known as football or basketball scholarships, snowboarding scholarships allow students to continue to participate in snowboarding at the collegiate level, hone their skills at snowboarding camps and schools, or just simply pay for college. Several scholarships exist exclusively for snowboarders; they come from a variety of sources.

Snowboard Camps and Schools

Snowboarders looking to improve their skills by participating in a snowboarding school or camp can find several that also offer scholarships. The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation in Nevada offers financial assistance covering up to 60 percent of program costs to snowboarders ages 8 and up to participate in training programs and competition teams. Other schools and camps, like the Camden Snow Bowl in Camden, Maine, and the High Cascade in Mt. Hood, Oregon, offer students scholarships to take part in camps and training classes offered by those entities.

Snowboarding Organizations

For-[rofit and nonprofit companies and organizations, especially those related to snowboarding, are sources of scholarships for snowboarders. Businesses like the Academy Snowboard Company give back to student snowboarders by offering college scholarships. Academy Snowboard designates 1 percent of all sales to the scholarship fund and offers scholarship winners $500 plus 1 percent of the sales in their region to be used for college costs. Nonprofit snowboarding organizations provide scholarships to student snowboarders; the United States of America Snowboard Association offers scholarships worth $75 to $425 to members.

Private Foundations

Several private foundations and funds offer snowboarding college scholarships. Many of the foundations and funds honor a former snowboarder, such as the Chris Zider Scholarship Fund, which offers two $15,000 college scholarships; and the Kevin Stillwell Snowboarding Scholarship, which provides money that snowboarders can use for training and competitions.

Colleges and Universities

Colleges and universities, especially those in ski regions, include snowboarding as a varsity, club or intramural sport, and some even offer athletic scholarships for snowboarders participating at the varsity level. Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village, Nevada, offers varsity ski and snowboard team members varying amounts of athletic scholarships to help pay for the costs of attending that school. Other colleges partner with ski and snowboard organizations to offer its athletes scholarships, like at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah. Westminster College works with the United States Ski and Snowboard Association to offer full-tuition snowboarding scholarships.
